The Harry Allen Davis Exhibit

The highlight of the exhibition is Harry Davis’ Prix de Rome-winning painting, Harvest Dinner on display at the Scholle House in New Harmony, IN

“While some artists are scratching their heads, trying to figure out what to paint next, I’ve got my whole life’s work laid out in front of me as long as there are 19th century buildings standing; so I’d better get busy.”
-Harry A. Davis

Harry Allen Davis (1914-2006) enjoyed a long and successful career as both a teacher at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis for 37 years and as a fine artist. He best known for his architectural paintings in his signature Indiana Regionalist style, including two featuring historic buildings in downtown Evansville featured in our exhibit.
Davis held a high status at the Hoosier Salon. He was a regular participant in the Annual Hoosier Salon exhibition in all but six between the years 1947 and 2005. He frequently won awards alongside many other prominent Indiana artists of the day including his wife Lois, Edmund Brucker, Robert Weaver, Rosemary Browne-Beck, Floyd Hopper, Ruth Anderson, and Donald Mattison. He garnered 38 merit awards and earned Best of Show (Outstanding Work, Any Medium) a record seven times, the most for a single artist in the exhibition’s 92-year history.
The exhibit can be seen on Historic New Harmony’s guided walking tours. Tours take place at 1 pm daily from the Atheneum/Visitors Center. Information on the tour program and how to obtain tickets may be found http://visitnewharmony.com/
The exhibition was produced by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

19th Annual First Brush of Spring Paint Out

It is almost time for one of my favorite New Harmony events, the Plein Air Paint Out sponsored by the Hoosier Salon Beginning on Thursday, April April 19th, numerous plein air artists will descend upon New Harmony to paint various outdoor settings throughout town.

These amazingly talented artists come from throughout the states to paint the beauty of New Harmony, enhance their skills in  various painting workshops, participate in several competitions, enjoy the comradeship and perhaps sell a painting or two.

I love to walk throughout town to watch the painters in action. I am always amazed by their ability to create such beauty regardless of the weather conditions. I also love the surprise of their chosen focus in their setting.

Artists will be out and about Thursday the 2oth and Friday the 21st. The Quick Draw Competition begins at 5:00 on Thursday with awards given at 7:30. The overall Paint Out Awards presentation will take place on Saturday, April 22nd at 2:30 at the Holy Angels Center.

Want to take home a work of art? The Art Sale will take place in the Ribeyre Center on Saturday the 22nd from 9-noon.

Whatever you do,visit New Harmony and don’t miss the beauty of spring in New Harmony as interpreted by these talented folks!
