As someone who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s the majority of my favorite musicians have been influenced by the Blues: The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers… the list goes on and on. Most of these folks will tell you they grew up listening to Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf – real Blues players. However, I never really felt any direct connection to these legends or really even the Blues until one fateful day in 1983.
Working as a lowly board operator at a public radio station I used to occupy myself during All Things Considered, Prairie Home Companion, etc. by digging through old records that were on the “Do Not Play” shelf. It was there I found Nina Simone Sings the Blues. When I dropped the needle on this seemingly benign record everything changed. The Blues spoke to me. I literally got the blues!
From that day I went on to connect with Mavis Staples and The Staples Family Singers which of course led me to Bonnie Raitt. More recently I’ve been listening to Beth Hart and Susan Tedeschi.
There is no better feeling in the world than to get the Blues! On Saturday February 20th I truly hope you will join me Under the Beams for a blues performance that will absolutely speak to you. Ruthie Foster will move you just like Mavis, Bonnie, and Beth. She’s a legend with a pedigree and a wall of awards to back it up. To give you a taste, watch Ruthie perform “Full Circle”.
