A Base Camp for an Entrepreneur

If you are feeling the urge to build a truly special business and be part of a truly special community I encourage you to plan a visit to New Harmony real soon and contact the folks at Wilson’s Auction & Realty to check out the old Odd Fellows building at 602 Main Street.

This 6,000 square foot building was built by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Located at the corner of Main and Tavern it is a very important commercial property to the community and everyone in town is crossing their fingers it will be put back to use as an anchor to New Harmony’s shopping district.

The ground floor is wide open. There was a time when it housed a local grocery and deli and man would we love for that to happen again, especially if it is connected to local farmers and producers. Of course, given the flexibility of the space it has almost unlimited business applications.

The 2nd floor was built as a ballroom and it still has the original wood flooring along with high ceilings and wonderful windows that supply gorgeous natural light. This space could be converted into loft apartments, office space, artists studios, recording studios, or all the above. Oh yeah, there is a freight elevator. Sweet!

In 2013 a bunch of super important improvements were made to this building including roof, gutters, masonry stabilization, floor joists, energy efficient wood windows & stairway.  The building’s original tin ceiling was preserved.

The Odd Fellows Building in New Harmony, Indiana is a gem. You would pay three or four times more for a similar building in St. Louis, Indianapolis, or Nashville but it wouldn’t be located in a community that has already gone through its restoration phase and is already a magnet for tourism like New Harmony.

My family & I discovered New Harmony 12 yrs ago. We bought the City Bldg/Town Hall that housed the original New Harmony Fire Dept. in 1900. We renovated the bldg to be our residence and retail antique shop – Firehouse Antiques & Estate Sales. Moving to New Harmony has been one of our the best decisions. We immediately felt the love of this community & have made many life long friends. If you are self driven & love to be involved, this place is for you! The rich history, the wide open spaces, along with the friendly residents will add to your lifestyle here in New Harmony!
